Shaping Textile for Architecture

Senseknit, presented for the first time at MADE EXPO 2019, is a sensorial pavilion that combines tradition, innovation and digital culture – key elements of the transformation of the fields of design and construction.

The prototype in a real scale will be exhibited again for the Design Week 2019 at Piazza Citta Lombardia, from 8th to 14th of April. The exposition will be accompanied by a seminar “Shaping textiles for architecture”.

The project is a result of an interdisciplinary research at Politecnico di Milano by the Material Balance Research group, SAPER Lab and Textiles HUB from the Department of Architecture, Built environment and Construction engineering and the Laboratory of Knitting from the Department of Design .

The Stoll digital knitting machines and the collaboration with the company Kn-hit (dynamic and novel initiative of the textile sector) allows the entire pavilion to be covered with knitted textiles, optimized with the technology of digital knitting. This intuitive environmental performance of the knitted textiles, with performative purposes, transforms the ancient tradition of the past into a future perspective.

The production of the knitted textiles used performative fibres with advanced properties, specifically a polyester fiber produced from the post- consumer plastic bottles Newlife™ by Sinterama, including special Hollow Core fibers for the noise absorbing effect.

In a groundbreaking development for the textile industry, C.L.A.S.S., an advocate for sustainable innovation, proudly highlights the achievements of its partner, ERCA Textile Chemical Solutions, with their latest innovation, REVE…
