Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart founded Vaute Couture (pronounced “Vote”), the first vegan apparel fashion house, in 2008 in Chicago on a mission to create the first winter dress coat warm enough for a Chicago winter made without any animal fibers, to innovate something better than wearing animals.

The first production run was funded entirely by customer requested preorders, and VAUTE moved production to NYC in 2010, opening its first flagship store in 2012, and had its solo debut on the New York Fashion Week grid in February 2013. The debut was covered by CNN as “breaking runway history” and called Leanne the “the Rebel of Fashion Week” (CNN Breaking News). Leanne has also been chosen as the “Game Changer- embodying courage, conviction, and creativity” of Fashion (Conde Nast & Mazda’s Mazda6 Campaign), “1 of 40 Redefining Green” (Grist.org) and called “the vegan scene queen, a badass businesswoman—informative & inspiring” (Bust Magazine).

She is Alicia Silverstone’s Kind Fashion Expert on theKindLife.com, and VAUTE has been named one of the 25 most innovative businesses in NYC.
