The high fashion label BROWN clothes was founded in June 2007 and is based in Amsterdam.
British designer Melanie Brown is the driving force behind the brand, which designs clothes for the strong, individual and conscious woman. BROWN designs for the woman who is aware of herself and her surroundings. It is all about personal expression. The label stands for innovative, edgy elegance. Strong constructed details make up the basic design, creating archetypical garments with playful, conceptual elements. Lines, shapes and details are intrinsic to the design. Melanie Brown has won several fashion awards and competitions, including the “Frans Molenaar Haute Couture Prize”, “The Fashion in the Air Competition” (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam), “The Who’s Next New Talent Competition” (Who’s Next International Fashion Fair, Paris).

Melanie Brown trained at The Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam and The Rotterdamse Snij School.

BROWN CLOTHES DEBUTS AT MODEFABRIEK WITH THE DUTCH FASHION FOUNDATION

Fashion as a direct reflection of what is happening in our society. Faster, faster, faster, too fast. BROWN‘s interpretation of ‘slow fashion’ is a kick against all that speed. Let’s slow it down and take the time to appreciate exactly what is going on.

Half of the June collection incorporates sustainable fabrics, examples of which are Newlife TM , modal, and even milk.

January and June takes its inspiration from The Merchant’s Tale, written by Chaucer in The Middle Ages. It is a story about an old man January who takes a young wife May. She is young and beautiful when she marries the old and lewd January. Through her marriage May is robbed of her innocence. May turns into June and her youthful beauty fades away, and she is transformed into a strong knowing woman. Faded beauty is not only seen in the patina of time and the muted colours of the silk floor tile print but in the overarching story of the BROWN CLOTHES SPRING/SUMMER 2014 COLLECTION. June starts with soft, light, almost virginal colours in flowing simple shapes and moves to pieces that integrate the silk print with unexpected fabric combinations and more structured details. June then transitions into a darker, more sophisticated silhouette with edgier materials, such as black pleated faux leather with a hidden detail of fresh green.
